Journal History

The international journal on virology Acta Virologica was founded in 1957 by Dr. D. Blaškovič (Bratislava) and Dr. A. A. Smorodintsev (Leningrad). Until 1993, the magazine was published quarterly in Prague under the auspices of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (Academia Praha publishing house) simultaneously in English and Russian versions. The Russian edition was prepared in close cooperation with the editors in Moscow. An international editorial board was responsible for the professional level of the journal. After 1990, Acta Virologica was published only in English and in the years 1994 – 2023 in Bratislava, at the Institute of Virology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, under the auspices of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (VEDA, SAP and AEP publishing houses).

Starting May 1, 2023, the journal Acta Virologica is published by a new publisher, Frontiers (the third most cited publisher in the world) and enables scientists to use all the advantages of Gold Open Access. We strongly believe this change will improve the journal and allow a wider distribution of Acta Virologica and the authors‘ publications worldwide. Providing immediate and unrestricted access to the latest research strengthens open science’s ability to inform, educate and advance.
